1. Commercial Independence & Affiliate Disclosure

Folio is funded primarily through affiliate commissions from licensed accommodation booking platforms. When you click on a hotel booking link on Folio and complete a reservation, the booking provider may pay us a referral commission.

Crucially, you never pay more by booking through a Folio link. The rates and terms displayed on the partner site are identical whether you visit directly or via Folio.

Our commercial model operates under four strict, unbendable rules:

• No paid inclusion: No hotel, chain, or property manager can buy their way onto a Folio shortlist. We do not sell sponsored listings, sponsored badges, or advertorial placements at any price.
• Zero commercial preview: Booking providers and hoteliers never see a page, review, or score before it is published.
• Editorial firewall: Our research team does not have commission targets or incentives tied to specific properties. An exceptional budget guesthouse or family pension is given equal or greater prominence than a luxury chain if its location, acoustic insulation, or value is superior.
• Unmonetized public infrastructure: All municipal transit advice, funicular routes, public elevators, walking shortcuts, and neighbourhood guides are 100% unmonetized by design.

2. Physical Ground-Truth: Topography, Elevation & Walking

Standard booking algorithms assume all walking distance is flat and linear. In historic cities like Porto, Lisbon, or the hills of San Sebastián, a 300-metre walk can involve an 18% incline grade, cobblestone flights of 120 steps, or an unlit pedestrian alley impassable with wheeled luggage.

Folio evaluates every property against physical terrain reality:

• Pedestrian Routing vs Driving Speed: Walking times are calculated strictly using pedestrian OpenStreetMap footway networks, accounting for pedestrian-only alleys, flights of stairs, and legal crossing points.
• Elevation & Slope Profiling: We analyze slope changes along primary walking corridors (e.g. from riverfront to central transit hubs). Where a route exceeds a 7% grade, our guides explicitly flag the vertical effort required.
• Vertical Mobility Shortcuts: We document the practical operation, ticketing, and reliability of public elevators (e.g. Elevador da Ribeira, Funicular dos Guindais) so travelers know when a steep hill can be avoided.
• Vehicle & Parking Logistics: We independently record Low Emission Zone (ZBE / ZER) restrictions, camera-enforced residential zones, and garage height clearances (essential for SUVs and vans) directly on hotel dossiers.

3. The Fact-Checking Standard

4. Data Integrity Pipelines & Human Editorial Oversight

Folio uses automated verification pipelines to parse, index, and monitor complex public datasets, including transit timetables, cadastral records, and municipal notices. Every publication is strictly governed by automated quality gates and direct human editorial review:

• Deterministic Quality Invariants: Automated checks run before anything is published. Room capacity claims can never exceed the property's verified room records, and the same fact is never repeated across a page.
• Human Editorial Ownership: Every published guide, neighbourhood breakdown, and curated hotel shortlist is researched, written, and verified by an editor who takes full responsibility for its factual accuracy.

5. Factual Corrections & Dispute Policy

Hotels change: renovations occur, management evolves, restaurants open or close, and prices fluctuate. We take factual accuracy seriously and maintain an open door for corrections.
