From Bilbao Airport to central Bilbao, the Bizkaibus A3247 runs every 15 minutes during peak hours (every 20 minutes off-peak, operating from 06:00 to 00:00). Cash fare is €3.00, or €1.14 when using a rechargeable Barik transport card. A single anonymous Barik card (€3.00 purchase fee, €5.00 initial top-up) can validate up to 10 passengers sequentially and provides a 20% discount on second-leg transfers within 50 minutes. The bus terminates at Bilbao Intermodal, making intermediate stops along Gran Vía and Plaza Circular beside Abando train station.
By contrast, the Lurraldebus DO50B connects Bilbao Airport directly to San Sebastián’s central Federico García Lorca bus terminal. Coaches depart hourly from 07:45 until 23:45, taking exactly 75 minutes along the AP-8 toll motorway. The single fare is €17.15 (credit cards accepted at the curb machine or online via Lurraldebus/PESA). Note that the Barik card does not provide a discount on the DO50B; the Basque Mugi card is the primary transit card for Gipuzkoa transport.
For the morning transfer from Bilbao to San Sebastián, travellers have two distinct transit modes: the Lurraldebus DO02 express highway coach from Bilbao Intermodal (70 minutes, €12.90, frequent departures via AP-8) or the scenic Euskotren E1 narrow-gauge railway from Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station to Donostia-Amara (2 hours 30 minutes, €6.50, Barik and Mugi cards valid). The E1 line winds through the green valleys of Durango and hugs the coastal cliffs near Zumaia and Zarautz, making it a spectacular slow-travel journey if morning schedule permits.
