Where to stay in Kraków: historic cobbles or Bohemian Kazimierz

historic cobbles or Bohemian Kazimierz

The 4-kilometre Planty green belt insulates Kraków's cobbled medieval centre from modern tram traffic. Kazimierz trades Rynek proximity for vibrant evening culture, while Podgórze offers riverside calm across the footbridge.

The short answer

Pick your Kraków base in 30 seconds

For a first visit, Stare Miasto inside the Planty is the easiest central choice. Kazimierz brings artisan cafes, synagogues, and evening wine bars but means a 15-minute walk to the Main Market Square. Podgórze provides riverside tranquility, while Kleparz gives direct rail access.

Pick by how you travel.

First-time visitors & weekenders

Stare Miasto (Old Town)

Puts the Main Market Square, St. Mary’s Basilica, and Wawel Castle within effortless walking distance.

Think twice if: You require direct vehicle drop-offs at hotel doorsteps without camera permits or bollard access.

Before you choose

Essential Kraków logistics before booking

Practical facts on transit, cobblestones, and car access.

Airport train vs taxi transfers

Koleje Małopolskie (SKA1) trains run every 30 minutes from Kraków Airport terminal directly into Kraków Główny station in 17 minutes. Fares are 17 PLN (€4). Taxis take 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and cost 80 to 120 PLN (€18–€28).

If arriving after midnight, airport trains stop running until 4:00 AM; use pre-booked official airport taxis or rideshares.

Checked Spring 20262

Old Town driving restrictions & parking

Stare Miasto inside the Planty is designated Zone A (pedestrian only) and Zone B (restricted access). Unauthorized vehicles are detected by automated license plate cameras with 500 PLN fines. Park in the 800-space underground garage at Plac Na Groblach beneath Wawel Castle.

Always contact your hotel beforehand if they have a dedicated garage to request camera registration.

Cobblestone rolling friction

Kraków’s central streets are paved with historic basalt and granite setts. Dragging heavy 4-wheel spinner suitcases over 400 metres can rattle wheels loose. The Planty park paths feature smooth asphalt surfaces that make bag transit significantly easier.

Select hotels along the Planty edge if travelling with heavy luggage to avoid deep-cobblestone drags.

Public transit ticketing

MPK Kraków operates an efficient tram and bus network. Standard single journeys cost 4 PLN (20-min) or 6 PLN (60-min). Tickets can be purchased directly on board trams and buses using contactless payment cards on validator touchscreens.

Tickets purchased on onboard contactless terminals are linked to your card; keep your physical card ready for inspection.
